Gallipoli named Best Local Drama of 2015 by the Sydney Morning Herald.
Arriving as it did in the year of the 100th anniversary of the campaign that became a legend, this series had a lot to live up to and a lot to achieve. Most Australians know at least the bones of the story so any retelling was going to have to be special. And this was. By focusing on one soldier, teenager Thomas “Tolly” Johnson (expertly played by Kodi Smit-McPhee) and following his journey to the beaches where so many died, we were given an intensely personal, yet still universal view of this pivotal moment in Australian history. For whatever reason, the seven-part series didn’t get the ratings Nine (and everyone else) anticipated, but it stood out against excellent competition. Here’s hoping in years to come it receives the recognition it deserves.
